What are cookies?
Cookies are installed through the request issued by a web server, a browser (eg: Internet Explorer, Chrome).
A cookie consists of 2 parts: the name and the content or value of the cookie. The duration of existence of a cookie is determined; technically, only the web server that sent the cookie can access it again when a user returns to the website associated with that web server.
There are 2 large categories of cookies
- are temporarily stored in the cookie file of the web browser so that it remembers them until the user exits the respective website or closes the browser window;
- they are stored on the hard drive of a computer or device and are activated again when you visit the site that created that specific cookie.
The lifetime of a cookie can vary significantly, depending on the purpose for which it is placed. Some cookies are single-use (such as session cookies), so they are not retained once the user leaves the site. Other cookies are maintained and reused each time the user returns to the site (persistent cookies). However, cookies can be deleted by the user at any time by using the browser settings.
Some content sections of some sites may be provided by third-party cookies such as an advertisement. Such cookies can be placed on the site and are called cookies placed by third parties because they are not placed by the owner of the site. Such third parties are in turn bound to comply with applicable legal regulations and the privacy policies of the respective site owner.
Why are cookies important to the internet?
Examples of important uses of cookies (which do not require the authentication of a user through an account)
- Offers adapted to the interests of users – retention of passwords;
- Advertising frequency limitation – limiting the number of times an advertisement is displayed for a specific user on a site;
Measurement, optimization and Analytics features – such as confirming a certain level of traffic on a website, what type of content is viewed and how a user arrives at a website (eg: through search engines, directly, from other websites- uri etc).
What types of cookies do we use?
- website performance: these remember the user’s preferences on this website;
- for geotargetting: they are used by a software that determines which country you come from, are completely anonymous and are only used for content targeting;
- for advertising: based on these we can find out whether or not you have viewed an online advertisement, what type of advertisement and how long it has been since you viewed this advertisement.
Do cookies contain personal data?
Cookies themselves do not require personal information to be used and, in most cases, do not personally identify Internet users. Personal data can be collected through the use of Cookies only to facilitate certain functionalities for the user.
Deleting Cookies
Most browsers offer the possibility to change cookie settings. These settings are usually found in the “options” or “preferences” menu of your browser.
